Why Businesses Need Regular Backups

An untested backup is a hopeful assumption. Here is how to turn it into a recovery capability.

Published 04 Mar 2026

Backups protect against far more than attacks. Accidental deletion, a failed migration, a corrupted database or a mistaken bulk update are all far more common than a targeted intrusion — and all equally damaging.

A credible backup strategy answers three questions: how much data can the business afford to lose, how long can it afford to be down, and who performs the restore. Those answers set the frequency, the retention window and the runbook.

Store copies away from the system they protect. A backup on the same server disappears with the server, and a backup in the same account disappears with a compromised credential.

Above all, rehearse the restore. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a safeguard.
